ELIZABETH CITY, NC-The Elizabeth City
State University Vikings were victorious
over the Chowan University Hawks 66-56
Tuesday evening at the RL Vaughan
Center.
With the win the Vikings snap a
four-game losing skid and even their
record on the season at .500 (8-8
overall). Anthony Hilliard registered
his 10th double-double of the
year posting game highs of 20 points and
17 rebounds. Behind his 17 boards the
Vikings were able to keep the Hawks at
bay (ECSU never trailed from the opening
tip) with a 43-30 rebounding edge.
Additionally as a team the Vikings shot
48% on the evening, attempting the
fewest shots from the floor in a game
this season (22-45).
At
one point in the second half, Chowan
(7-10) did make a run at ECSU cutting
the 11-point halftime deficit to three
with 9:38 to go. On their next trip down
the floor a lay-up by C.J. Pigford
halted a four minute scoring drought by
the Vikings and by the 4:13 mark ECSU
had pushed the lead back to double
figures (56-46). Before fouling out,
Pigford netted 18 points to go along
with 6 rebounds, 2 blocks and a steal.
Devin Mooring contributed 11 points to
round out the double figure scorers for
ECSU.
Trayvon Lathan and Jaleel Nelson each
had 17 points in a losing effort for the
Hawks.
The Vikings will return to action on
Thursday, January 25th when
they take on Saint Paul’s College in a
key CIAA Eastern Division match-up.
Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm at the RL
Vaughan Center.
