Dover, Del. – Delaware State’s Jahsha
Bluntt showed why he was the MEAC
preseason Player of the Year, making six
three-pointers and scoring 24 points to
lead the Hornets to a 75-64 victory over
visiting Hampton Saturday afternoon.
And when Blount wasn’t hitting from the
outside the Pirates were hurting
themselves with one of their 22
turnovers. The win was the Hornets’
sixth in the last seven meetings against
Hampton which fell to 6-11, 3-4 in the
MEAC.
The Pirates jumped out to an early lead
on a three-pointer by Vincent Simpson
and a basket by Rashad West, but Bluntt
made his first three-pointer to put the
Hornets (9-9, 6-0 MEAC) in front 10-9
and they would never look back.
With 4:47 remaining in the first half
the score stood at 29-25 Delaware State
following a three-point play by West,
but the Hornets proceeded to go on a
12-2 run over the next three minutes to
take command of the game. Roy Bright
got things going with a jumper in the
lane, while Troy Roundtree and Bluntt
added two baskets apiece to give the
Hornets a 43-30 halftime lead.
The Hornets had their largest lead of
the game, 73-53, with just over three
minutes remaining before the Pirates
closed the game on an 11-2 run to
provide the final margin.
West and Mike Freeman led the Pirates
with 15 points apiece, while Bluntt got
help from Roundtree and Bright who
scored 14 each.
