MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Norfolk State University center Calvin Brown was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the league announced Monday, while Hampton University forward Mike Freeman was name Rookie of the Week. Brown (Center, 6-9, 255, Sr.-Mitchellville, Md.) averaged 20 points and 15.5 rebounds during the Spartans two games last week. Including shooting impressively from the field, 72 percent, he also recorded double-double performances in both games. In his top performance against non-conference opponent Winston-Salem State University, Brown scored 20 points and grabbed a career-high 20 rebounds in the disappointing loss. His 20 rebounds top’s the conference rebounding performances of the season and ties for the third most in Division I this season. Freeman (Forward, 6-8, 220, Fr.-Alexandria, Va.) averaged 16 points and six rebounds in addition to shooting 87 percent (13-of-15) from the field for the Pirates last week. Against Coppin State, Freeman was perfect from the floor (8-of-8) and scored five of his 17 points in overtime to lead the Pirates to victory. Freeman, who garnered Rookie of the Week accolades last week, has won the honor four times. Other Top Performances: Jahsha Bluntt (DSU) averaged 19 points to keep the Hornets undefeated among conference opponents last week. He scored 24 points, six rebounds and dished out three assists against the Pirates. Jimmy Hudson (BCC) scored 18 points and connected on four three-pointers against Howard. Brian Mason (SCSU) averaged 14 points and seven rebounds for the Bulldogs last week. He connected on 12-of-14 baskets from the free-throw line against Bethune-Cookman to help South Carolina State win their first road game of the season. Rome Sanders (FAMU) scored 18 points and grabbed six rebounds to help the Rattlers defeat Maryland Eastern Shore. Rashad West (Ham) averaged 18.5 points, 2.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game to lead the Pirates to a 1-1 record for the week. -30-
