MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS
Wildcats’ McCray, Bears’ Adams and Hawks’ McBride Earn Weekly Honors

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Bethune-Cookman College senior guard Tristan McCray was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week the conference announced today, while Morgan State University guard  Corin Adams and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore forward April McBride earned Co-Rookie of the Week accolades.

McCray (Guard/Forward, 5-8, Sr., Gainesville, Fla.) posted 35 points, 15 rebounds, 14 assists and eight steals, helping Bethune-Cookman to a 2-1 mark last week. McCray averaged 42 percent from the field (14-of-33) and 40 percent (4-of-10) from behind the arc. She recorded her first double-double of the year and second of her career with 10 points and 10 rebounds in a conference win over Norfolk State.

Adams(Guard, 5-5, Fr., Brooklyn, N.Y.)  averaged 16.5 points, six rebounds and three assists, while leading the Bears to a 2-0 mark last week. She totaled 13 points, including the game winner against Delaware State to give the Bears their first conference win of the season. Adams followed that performance by scoring eight of Morgan State’s 10 points in overtime and finishing with a game and career-high 20 points against Hampton.

McBride (Forward, 6-1, Fr., New Rochelle, N.Y.) averaged 15.5 points, 9.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals, helping the Hawks to a 2-0 record. McBride was 5-of-6 from the field for 12 points and nine rebounds in a conference win against South Carolina State. She earned her second double-double of the season with a career-high 19 points and 10 rebounds in a non-conference win against Winston-Salem State.

Other Top Performers:

Jelila Abdul- Bassit (UMES) recorded a career-high with 19 points in a win over Winston-Salem State.

Marke Freeman (FAMU) was perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 2-of-2 from behind the three-point arc in a conference win over South Carolina State.

Thea Littlepage (DSU) set a school record with six blocks, along with a career-high 10 rebounds in a lost to Morgan State.


Rashida Suber
(CSU) scored a career-high 28 points by connecting on a 12 field goals in a conference win over Norfolk State.

Hampton’s West and Freeman Earn Weekly Honors

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Hampton University guard Rashad West was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the league announced Monday, while teammate Mike Freeman was named the Rookie of the Week.

West (Guard, 6-1, 175, Jr.-Raleigh, NC) averaged 29 points and 4.5 rebound while shooting 50 percent from the field as the Pirates finished the week 1-1 among MEAC conference opponents.  His best efforts came against the Florida A&M Rattlers as West scored a career-high 33 points including five three-point baskets to end the Rattlers undefeated conference record.  Against Morgan State, West registered his fourth 20-point game of the season and added five rebounds and three steals in the Pirates disappointing overtime loss. 

Freeman (Forward, 6-8, 220, Fr.-Alexandria, Va.) averaged 17 points and 11.5 rebounds after posting back-to-back double-double performances last week against Florida A&M and Morgan State.  Against the Rattlers he scored 14 points and grabbed 12 boards (eight offensive) for his first career-double double.  He returned the next game to register 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting and pulled down 11 rebounds in the Pirates home loss to Morgan State.  This is Freeman’s third Rookie of the Week honor. 

Other Top Performances:

Tony Murphy (NSU) averaged 18 points and nine rebounds to lead NSU to a 2-0 MEAC conference record last week. 

Jimmy Hudson (BCC) scored a season-high 23 points, while shooting 50 percent (8-of-16) from the field in the Wildcats disheartening loss to the Norfolk State Spartans.  

Rome Sanders (FAMU) recorded 24 points and pulled down six rebounds in a loss to Hampton.  He averaged 71.4 percent (10-of-14) from the field in the Rattlers two games last week. 

Ronald Timus (MSU) connected on 7-of-10 baskets for a team-high 21 points to lead the Bears to an overtime victory against the Pirates.  The Bears first victory against Hampton since the 2003-04 season, Timus also hauled down eight boards, four assists and three steals in the win.

Reggie Holmes (MSU) led the Bears with 14 points against Delaware State and aided his team in recording their first road win of the season with 20 points against the Pirates.  He completed a critical three-point play late in overtime to secure the victory.
