Devilettes Defeat Lady Tigers

Itta Bena, Miss. --- The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State
University picked up their second Southwestern Athletic Conference win
tonight as they defeated the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern 60-52.

Going into the game the Devilettes were ranked ninth and the Lady
Tigers were ranked tenth. The game wasn’t just a conference match-up
but a battle to gain footing and move up in conference ranking. 
Scoring for the Devilettes began with a two point shot by Ebony Fears
at the 19:31 mark. TSU would take the lead at the 18:54 mark with a
three point shot form Jessica Stephens (3-2).  Amanda Hammond nailed a
three point basket to push the score to 5-3. The Devilettes maintained
their lead going into the half with a score of 34-16.

Scoring for the second half began with TSU’s Tina Brown. Brown cut
MVSU’s lead to 34-19. The Devilettes’ did not score until the 17:11
mark with a lay-up by Portia Wilson. The Lady Tigers continued to
rally back but were unable to secure the win as the Devilettes
declawed them and sent them home unhappy. The Devilettes scratched the
floor with the claws of the Lady Tigers with an eight point victory.

The leading scorers for the Devilettes were Portia Wilson and
Karmethia Mazique. Wilson had 13 points and three rebounds. Mazique
added 12 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Ashley Robinson
also chipped in nine points, eight rebounds, and three assists.

Leading Texas Southern was Brown with 14 points, two rebounds, and
three assists. Also aiding the Lady Tigers in their lost was Stephens
with 10 points, four rebounds, and two assists.

The Devilettes will be in action again on January 27 when they travel
to Jackson, Miss. to take on the Lady Tigers of Jackson State in a
3:00 p.m. tip-off. They will also travel to Grambling, LA on January
29 to take on the Lady Tigers of Grambling State in a 5:00 p.m. tip-
off.
