Devilettes Succumb to Lady Panthers

Itta Bena, Miss. --- The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State
University are still trying to find their footing in conference play
as they lost to the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A & M 75-62. The
Devilettes are now 1-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

Portia Wilson began scoring for the Devilettes early in the first half
with a lay-up. The score went back and forth between the two teams as
the Lady Panthers made a free throw at the 18:53 mark and then a lay-
up at the 18:45 taking the score to 3-2. MVSU took a 4-3 lead at the
18:36 mark with a lay-up by Karmethia Mazique. The home team
maintained the lead until the 14:16 mark; the visitors took the lead
10-8 at this point and held it for the remainder of the first half.
The score at the half was 34-31 for Prairie View.

Up by three at the break, the Lady Panthers tried to seal the game
immediately following the half but the Devilettes battled back and
tied the score at the 15:34 mark 40-40. Coming out of the tie PVU took
the lead by one 40-41 and walked it out.  From the 15:08 mark the Lady
Panthers never looked back. They secured the game by a margin of 13
points (62-75) when the final buzzer sounded. 

Leading scoring for the Devilettes was Portia Wilson with 18 points,
seven rebounds, and one assist. Also pulling in double digits were
Ashley Robinson and Karmethia Mazique. Robinson turned in a double-
double with 12 points, 11 rebounds, and two assists while Mazique
tallied 10 points, one rebound, and two assists.

The leading scorer for the Lady Panthers was Gaati Werema, who also
had a double-double, with 26 points and 10 rebounds. Shavonne Smith
and Karessa Sauls both scored in the double digits to aid PVU in their
victory. Smith put up 12 points, six rebounds, and three assists,
while Sauls totaled 11 points, three rebounds, and one assist.

The Devilettes will be in action again on January 22 at 5:30 p.m. when
they host Texas Southern.
