MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS 12/3/07

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. ( – Bethune-Cookman forward John Holmes was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week, the league announced Monday.  N.C. A&T’s Thomas Coleman was named the Rookie of the Week while Hampton’s Matt Pilgrim was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week.

Holmes (Forward, 6-5, 190, Jr., Salisbury, Md.) averaged 18 points, while shooting 57-percent from the field, as he led the Wildcats to two victories last week.  Against Edward Waters, Holmes posted a game-high 26 points with seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots.  He followed that performance with his first double-double performance of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds against interstate rival Florida A&M. 

Coleman (C, 6-9, 220, Fr., Louisville, KY) recorded 16 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots in two games for the Aggies last week.  His best performance was against Norfolk State where he fell one rebound shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Pilgrim (Forward, 6-8, 225, So., Cincinnati, Ohio) becomes the MEAC’s first Defensive Player of the Week after aiding the Pirates to a 3-0 mark last week.  Pilgrim pulled down 15 rebounds in the three games, 10 defensive.  He also posted two blocked shots and three steals.  His defensive efforts aided the Pirates in a 65-31 victory over Howard, holding the Bison to the nation’s lowest scoring output by a Division I team of the season with 13 points in the first half and 18 in the second.

Other Top Performers:

Jeromnte Bush (BCU) scored 18 points with two steals against the Univ. of Connecticut.

Michael Deloach (NSU) averaged 22 points and 2.5 rebounds aiding the Spartans to a 1-1 mark last week.

Jason Flagler (SCSU) registered 16 points, while shooting 8-of-13 from the field, in the Bulldogs win over WSSU. 

Denzel Jackson (UMES) recorded 12 points and 16 rebounds in the Hawks two games last week.

Donald Johnson (DSU) posted a double-double against Maryland E. Shore with 22 points and 13 rebounds.  

Oliver Prince (FAMU) collected 14 rebounds against the Univ. of Connecticut.

Jamar Smith (MSU) connected on 50-percent (4-of-8) from 3-point range and averaged 25 points in two games last week for the Bears

Ed Tyson (UMES) scored 24 points in two games for the Hawks last week.

Rashad West (HAM) scored a game-high 18 points, shooting 6-of-14 from the field, in the Pirates win over Howard.

MEAC ANNOUNCES WEEKLY BASKETBALL HONORS WOMEN

Florida A&M’s Jones, Hampton’s Perry and Delaware State’s Littlepage Earn Weekly Honors

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. –Florida A&M junior Deidra Jones was named the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week the conference announced on Monday. Hampton’s Quanneisha Perry was named Rookie of the Week while Delaware State’s Thea Littlepage earned Defensive Player of the Week accolades.

Jones (Guard, 5-10, Jr., Powder Springs, Ga.)  scored a career-high 28 points and recorded six rebounds, four assists and three steals in a conference win over Bethune-Cookman. The junior guard shot 50-percent (5-of-10) from the field, 67-percent (2-of-3) from beyond the arc and 89-percent (16-of-18) from the free-throw line. 

Perry (Forward, 5-10, Fr., Decatur, Ga.) averaged 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks in two games for the Lady Pirates. In an one point overtime loss to Air Force, Perry recorded a double-double of 16 points, and 10 rebounds. She also tallied 10 points and three rebounds against Ohio.

Littlepage (Center, 6-1, So., Upper Marlboro, Md.) earned the leagues’ first MEAC Defensive Player of the Week honor after helping the Lady Hornets to a 1-1 mark. Littlepage tallied 18 rebounds, two assists and four blocks in the two games played.  Against #18 Michigan State, Littlepage recorded 10 rebounds (three defensive) and added one block and three steals. She followed that performance with eight rebounds (two defensive) and three blocks in a win over Army.

Other Top Performers:

Corin Adams (MSU) scored 14 points and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the free-throw line in a win over Mt. St. Mary’s.

Amber Bland (NCAT) averaged 16.5 points, and five rebounds to help the Lady Aggies to a 2-0 mark last week.

Artavia Burns (Ham) registered a season-high 29 points on (13-of-19) from the field in an overtime loss to Air Force.

Shannon Carlisle (How) dished out a game-high five assists versus Brown.

Raquel Collier (DSU) led all players with 19 points including 7-of-8 from the free throw line in a 65-62 loss to #18 Michigan State.

Brittany Dodson (MSU) came off the bench against Mt. St. Mary’s and scored 18 points for the Lady Bears.

Natasha Ferguson (B-CU) posted her third double-double of the year with 11 points and 12 rebounds against Florida A&M.

Demetria Frank (B-CU) led the Lady Wildcats with 21 points, three rebounds and seven steals in a loss to the Lady Rattlers.

Tiffany Gadsen (NSU) led the Spartans with 22 points and 11 boards against Winthrop.

April McBride (UMES) registered six rebounds (four defensive) along with four steals and held Longwood to a season-low 43 points.

Jenell Moore (SCSU) averaged 14.5 points and 11 rebounds in two wins for the Lady Bulldogs.

Shalamar Oakley (CSU) led the Lady Eagles with 24 points (12-of-20) in a loss to Lafayette.

Jaleesa Sams (NCAT) averaged nine points, five rebounds and 3.5 assists last week for the Lady Aggies.
