CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Johnson C. Smith University hosted their first home game on the 2007-2008 season, entertaining the Lady Bears of Shaw University. The #10 Lady Bears were undefeated coming into tonight’s much anticipated contest. Unfortunately for Shaw, Johnson C. Smith had upset on their mind and did so by a score of 48-47.

JCSU came out rather flat shooting a mere 23%. The Lady Bears were not that much ahead shooting just 29%. Jamie Goshen scored 10 of her team’s 21 first half points en route to the 21-14 first half score.

The second stanza is what ignited the crowd and determined the outcome of this fierce contest. JCSU played toe-to-toe with the Lady Bears, closing in on the seven point lead Shaw built. The Lady Golden Bulls had a chance to tie the score but Demetria Bell missed both free throws with 99:99 minutes remaining. She would quickly make up for that miscue scoring the easy lay-up on a fast break to tie the score with 9:39 left in regulation.

The Lady Golden Bulls would not go away. JCSU finally took the lead on a fade-away jumper by Kyria Buford.  Shaw regained the lead on a long ball by none other than Goshen with less than five minutes left.

The lead would go back and forth as neither team would gain more than a two possession advantage. With less than 60 seconds left in the ball game, JCSU had a one point lead. It all came down to one final in-bound with 3.5 ticks left on the clock. Shaw tried to get the ball in, but it did not work in their favor.

Amber Stoney led all JCSU scorers with 17 points and five rebounds. Buford’s 16 points were not far behind. She added five rebounds, two steals, and a block. Bell had double-digit rebounds.

For the Lady Bears, Jamie Goshen led te way with 17 points while NaKeisha Anthony added a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.

After taking a few days to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday, JCSU will be back in action when they travel to Elizabeth City State University on Tuesday, November 27, 2007. Game time is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at the R.L. Vaughan Center in Elizabeth City, N.C.
