Johnson C. Smith Defeats Bluefield State 83-66
Four of Five Starters Score in Double Figures

CHARLOTTE, N.C.  Johnson C. Smith University hosted Bluefield State College in their home opener tonight in Brayboy Gymnasium. JCSU won their second contest in as many games by a score of 83-66. Four of the five starters scored in double figures tonight led by Jerry Hollis’ 18 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks.

The first half saw the Golden Bulls control a six point lead. Despite Bluefield State shooting an impressive 50% from the field, 13 turnovers turned into 16 points and the deficit.

JCSU pulled away mid-way through the second quarter swelling the lead to 14 points. Bluefield State cut the lead to as little as seven. However, the Bulls settled down and extended the lead en route to the 17 point victory.

Other Golden Bulls in double figures were Edmund Rainey and David Sanders with 12 each followed by Maurice Hooper and James Dillard with 11 respectively. Rainey also had seven boards.

The Big Blues were led by Howard Coston’s 21 points. Rico Thompson and Logan Shortridge chipped in 13 and 12 points in the loss.

After taking a few days to enjoy the Thanksgiving holiday, JCSU will be back in action when they travel to Elizabeth City State University on Tuesday, November 27, 2007. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the R.L. Vaughan Center in Elizabeth City, N.C.
