WINSTON-SALEM, NC – It was a bad homecoming for the
Winston-Salem State University Lady Rams who took a
75-50 loss to the Radford Highlanders in their first
home game of the season. The Lady Rams had a tough
time adjusting to their new home arena, the Lawrence
Joel Veterans Coliseum Annex, where the team will play
11 home games this season, shooting just 34% from the
field and 12% from the three-point line.

The visiting Highlanders seemed to like the LJVM
Coliseum Annex shooting 44% from the field for the
game. The young Lady Rams were valiant in the game
with just 19 turnovers and forcing 18 Highlander
turnovers in the contest, but could not match the
strength of RU’s experienced front court duo of Kelli
Darden and Corrie Fertitta, who combined for 32 points
and 20 rebounds in the game.

WSSU senior guard Keoshia Worthy led the way for the
Lady Rams with 12 points and tying a career-high with
eight assists in the loss. Freshman center Vontisha
Woods continues to be impressive with 12 points, seven
rebounds, and a blocked shot in the loss. Freshman
guard Rene Rector was strong in the game with 10
points in the loss.

The Lady Rams opened the game strong jumping out to a
13-6 lead on a jumper by freshman guard Corbin
Bradford with 15:04 in the half. Radford would strike
back chipping away at the WSSU lead until tying the
game 25-25 with just over seven minutes left in the
first half. It was a 9-0 Radford run the erased the
Lady Ram lead. The Highlanders would go on to score
four more unanswered points and take control of the
game, 30-25 with 6:13 left in the half.

Down the final stretch of the half, the Lady Rams were
outscored 7-18 and took a 48-32 deficit into the
locker room at the half.

The second half turned out tougher for the Lady Rams
as the team never got any closer than 14 points of
catching the Highlanders. Worthy scored six second
half points to lead the Lady Rams in the half, but was
handcuffed by just one second half assist. The team
went six scoreless minutes in the opening portion of
the half, allowing a 13-0 Radford run that put the
game out of reach for the Lady Rams. A lay-up by
Worthy ended the drought, but left the Lady Rams
trailing, 38-63 with 11:54 left in the game. The final
10 minutes of the game saw the Lady Rams manage just
five field goals and end the night with the 50-75
loss.

With the loss, the Lady Rams fall to 0-2 on the season
and will hit the road to seek their next win, facing
the Auburn Tigers in the opening round of the
Klosterman Buckeye Classic hosted by The Ohio State
University in Columbus, Ohio.
