Jones Picks Up MEAC Baseball Player of the Week Award (VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – ) Bethune-Cookman University junior left fielder Neal Jones has been named as this week’s Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Player of the Week in baseball following a perfect 4-0 campaign for the Wildcats. B-CU first defeated Jacksonville before sweeping a key MEAC series with Delaware State—who entered the weekend ranked number two in the league. Jones, a junior from Cecil, Ga., is a super-speedy transfer from Abraham Baldwin College. The sure-footed, cunning outfielder has been one of the hottest-hitting athletes on the team as of late, as he helped the ‘Cats with an 8-for-14 showing at the plate in four games last week. His average was a whopping .571, while raising his season batting average to a team second-best 34.8 percent (.348). Standing at 6-foot-2, 185-pounds, Jones used his long legs with a monstrous stride to steal four bases last week, and help to collect four putouts in the outfield. He went on to post a triple, a double and bat in two runs while scoring six times on the week as well. This is the first Player of the Week award for Neal Jones, and the second time in as many weeks that B-CU has collected the league’s Player of the Week award as released from the conference office in Virginia Beach, Va. Fellow outfielder Angel Mercado picked up the honor last week after a series sweep of Maryland-Eastern Shore. Florida A&M’s Austin Dill was named as the Pitcher of the Week following his first career no-hit performance in a 3-1 win over Norfolk State this past weekend. It was the fifth no-hitter for the Rattlers in school history. The Rookie of the Week award finally left the eastern shore of Maryland [UMES] this week, making its way to the Triad in North Carolina at North Carolina A&T. Christian Beatty batted .417 on the week with a 5-for-12 showing at the plate to collect the weekly Rookie of the Week award for the Aggies as they went 3-1 with wins against Coppin State in a series sweep. The Wildcats return to action on Tuesday, May 8 when they host intrastate foe Florida Atlantic University in a make-up game from a month ago at Jackie Robinson Ballpark in Daytona Beach. The game begins at 6 p.m. with live stats available through Game Tracker on the B-CU athletic website. --BCU--
