BOWIE STATE SWEEPS STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE YEAR AWARDS

(DURHAM, NORTH CAROLINA – )  Bowie State University’s Janine Canlas was selected as the 2006-2007 CIAA Female Student-Athlete of the Year and Terrence Stafford were selected as the 2006-2007 CIAA Male Student-Athlete of the Year.  This year marked the first time in the five year history of the award that both student-athletes came from the same institution.

Canlas, a senior biology major for the two-time CIAA bowling champions of Bowie State, averaged 181 during the season, had a high game of 243 and a high set of 610.  She was named the CIAA bowling championships MVP and attained a perfect 4.0 GPA during the Fall 2006 semester.

Terrence Stafford began his Bowie State University athletic career as a walk-on for the Bulldogs football program.  Stafford, an All-CIAA Second Team selection as a defensive back, ranked second the team in total tackles with 53, tied for second in team sacks (4.5) and tied for third in team pass breakups with three.  The Virginia Beach native is a senior Psychology major maintained a 3.75 cumulative GPA through Fall 2006.
