BETHUNE-COOKMAN NOTES

Bethune-Cookman, champions of both the

regular season and tournament of the Mid-

Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), enter the

Tallahassee Regional as a familiar #4 seed, but

are no strangers to Dick Howser  Stadium or the

Seminoles. This is the fourth time under head

coach Mervyl Melendez that Bethune-

Cookman will be taking the three-plus hour trip

over to the state’s capital for an NCAA

Tournament in baseball. B-CU also made trips

to FSU in 2004, 2001 and 2000 ... all resulting in

first-round losses at the hands of the Seminoles.

The Wildcats needed two games to hold off a

resilient North Carolina A&T squad in the

MEAC Tournament series, but they did use a

strong come-from-behind effort to claim the

school’s 11th MEAC Tournament crown, and

their eighth NCAA Tournament bid.

Francisco Rodriguez toes the mound for the

Wildcats on Friday night against Florida State,

looking to keep his 10-win season going strong.

Rodriguez leads the team in innings pitched

(104.1)while teammate Dustin Blackwell sits just

behind him at 104.0. Rodriguez also earned the

league’s first-ever Pitcher of the Year award two

weeks ago in Norfolk, Va.

He leads the team in strikoeuts (81) and wins

(10), but also gives up the most hits ... but

always seems to find a way out of a jam with

just a 3.28 ERA on the campaign.

Mervyl Melendezwas named Coach of the Year

for the fourth time during the MEAC

Tournament, while nine (9)Wildcatsmade their

way onto both the First and Second Team All-

MEAC squad.
