NCCU GOLF OPENS SEASON AT LONGWOOD’S MANOR INTERCOLLEGIATE
Eagles Place Tenth, Show Improvement In Each Of Three Rounds

FARMVILLE, Va. – North Carolina Central University opened its season with a 10th-place performance at Longwood University’s Manor Intercollegiate in Farmville, Va., on Sept. 8-9.

The Eagles showed improvement in each of the three rounds, scoring 342 in round one, 340 in round two and 315 in the final round. NCCU’s 997 total score was 11 strokes behind ninth place Winston-Salem State, but ahead of last place Virginia at Wise (1,018).

Senior Chris Winters topped NCCU and placed tied for 39th with a 240 total score, including a pair of 82s on day one and a 76 (+4) in the final round.

NCCU senior Josue Garza and freshman Brandon Cox tied for 48th place with a score of 247. Cox shaved 15 strokes off of his opening-round 89 to shoot a team-best round of 74 (+2) on Tuesday.

After shooting 87 and 96 on day one, NCCU rookie Ronald Royster posted an 80 in the closing round.

Host Longwood won the event with a team score of 864 (287+283+294), followed by second place Murray State (881) and third place Presbyterian (893).

Longwood’s Michael Young captured top medalist honors with a three-round score of 213 (-3).

Up next for NCCU, the Eagles travel to Atlanta for the National Black College Alumni Hall of Fame Foundation Tournament on Sept. 26-28.
