Raleigh,
NC – (September
30, 2008) The spirit of
community and assistance
continues through the Men’s
Basketball program at Shaw
University. Cleo Hill, Jr.,
Head Men’s Basketball Coach
presented 24 jerseys to the
Recreational Department of
the Wake Correctional Center
on Tuesday, September 30th.
Theodore T. Walker,
Correctional Programs
Supervisor and Andrea Moore,
Programs Case Manager were
on hand to receive the
donation from Coach Hill on
behalf of the Shaw Athletic
program.
Six teams at the facility
will begin intramural play
on Monday, October 6th
through November 2nd.
Tournament play will begin
immediately following the
regular season. The
facility also offers outlets
in flag football,
volleyball, softball and
horseshoes that the inmates
take to heart in the spirit
of competition between
dorms. The younger inmates
play against the seasoned
veterans and they feature a
40+ and 40 under league.
Following tournament play,
the winners will be
recognized with certificates
and a plaque at one of the
annual banquets held in
January or June. The plaque
will feature the team photo
and the dorm of the
winners. The plaques are
showcased in the dining hall
for the visiting family
members and friends to
enjoy. It serves as a
constant reminder that good
competition is a real part
of the lives of the inmates
at the facility. Mr. Walker
stated, “This type of
competition teaches
discipline, camaraderie and
gives them something to look
forward to that will help
prepare them physically and
mentally to re-enter
society.”
The facility is a minimum
custody men’s work camp for
414 inmates that will return
to the ranks of society
after undergoing intensive
rehabilitation through the
correctional system. The
men are trained to handle
job interviews, acquire
GED’s and learn disciplined
trades that will give them a
hand up once they have gone
beyond the gates of
incarceration.
Coach Hill stated, “We are
pleased to be a small part
of assistance towards making
a difference.” That’s the
Shaw University way.
