VIRGINIA STATE GAINS SPLIT WITH ALDERSON-BROADDUS
Jim S. Junot
Virginia State University's John Bivens was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to cap a three-run rally which gave VSU a 5-4 win over the previously-unbeaten Battlers on March 6 at Colbert Field in Ettrick, Va. VSU had entered the final inning trailing 4-2, but the Trojans' DeShawn Showell singled and then moved to second when Michael Whiten was hit by a pitch. VSU's Marcus Waller reached safely when Alderson-Broaddus' Kyle Oney threw wild to third base. The Trojans' Daniel Cornett then singled in Showell to make the score 4-3. The Battlers' Frankie Mullens then came in relief of Oney, and retired VSU's Andew Holt on a fly out to centerfield. Mullens then hit Shawn McEnhimer to tie the score, and then hit Bivens to give VSU the win. In the opener, VSU's David Gibson held the Battlers to one run until the seventh inning. Alderson-Broaddus scored four runs in the top of the seventh to deal VSU a 5-2 loss. The double-header split gives VSU a 2-8 record while Alderson-Broaddus is now 3-1. The two teams meet each other in another double-header at Colbert Field on March 7 at 12 noon.
