Cardinals win pair of three-setters to get past Gold Rush Ed Cassiere 03/10/10 NEW ORLEANS -- Lamar survived a pair of three-set singles matches and defeated Xavier University of Louisiana 5-2 in a men's tennis dual Wednesday at City Park.The Gold Rush (7-3), ranked 13th in the NAIA, scored when Hassan Abbas defeated Robert Lee 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 singles and Mikhail Vaval beat Dusan Savkovic 6-4, 7-5. But Lamar (8-3) held a 4-2 lead through singles after the Cardinals' Marton Horvath beat Sean Richardson 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 at No. 5 and Denis Ermilov rallied past Mario Myles 6-7, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3.Lamar clinched the match when Richard Filkuka and Diego Snyder defeated Richardson and Cameron Knowles 8-5 at No. 3 singles. The other two doubles matches were stopped at that point.The loss was Xavier's second in a row after seven consecutive victories, and it was the Gold Rush's second loss of the season against an NCAA Division I opponent. "The guys played tough against another good D1 team," Xavier Coach Alan Green said. "If we can play like that this weekend at the AUM Invitational, we should do very well there." |
