Powell receives more NAIA All-America honorable mention Ed Cassiere 03/23/10 NEW ORLEANS -- For the second straight year Xavier University of Louisiana's Brittany Powell received honorable mention on the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball All-America Team. It's Powell's second honorable mention on an All-America team this season. She received the same distinction on the NAIA State Farm Coaches' All-America Team a week ago.Powell, a 6-foot senior forward/center from Milwaukee and a graduate of Divine Savior Holy Angels High School, led the Gold Nuggets with 14.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots per game this season and was the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Year. Xavier finished 28-6, won GCAC regular-season and tournament championships and earned a berth in the NAIA Division I National Championship.It's the fourth straight season a member of the Gold Nuggets received All-America honorable mention. Jarryn Cleaves earned that distinction in 2006-07 and 2007-08.No one from the GCAC made the first, second or third teams, each of which consisted of 10 players. Two other GCAC players, Tougaloo sophomore Victoria Jones and Loyola senior Trenese Smith, received honorable mention.The NAIA Women's Basketball Coaches' Association All-America Committee selected the team, which was announced Tuesday night prior to the NAIA D-I national championship game between Union (Tenn.) and Azusa Pacific. |
