WSSU looking to follow great efforts on the road

RALEIGH, NC – The 2010 outdoor track & field season remains in full swing as the Winston-Salem State Rams and Lady Rams return to action at the 2010 Reebok Raleigh Relays, this weekend. After some great performances in front of a hometown crowd at the 2010 Wake Forest Open, the Rams and Lady Rams will look to remain strong when they head to Paul Derr Track in Raleigh, N.C.

The meet will be a big one for all the teams involved with both high school, collegiate, and unattached athletes competing in the event. The Rams and Lady Rams will face a host of great NCAA Division I and Division II teams at the event. Teams from host N.C. State, George Mason, defending Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion Norfolk State, and Ohio State will be attendance as well as teams from Shaw, North Carolina Central, and Bowie State will be in attendance at the event.

A host of Rams and Lady Rams will look to keep up their great efforts early this season. In addition to the usually great performances by sophomore Andrew Chebii and senior Paul Williams, the Rams have seen a number of top runners posting some great times this season. Sophomore Aaron Barnes is also impressive lately. He put on a great performance at the Wake Forest Open with a 9:11.39 in the men’s 3000m run and a 9:57.79 in the men’s 3000m steeplechase. Sophomore Desmond Wiggan fought past illness last week to post a 4:12.39 in the men’s 1500m run. He is poised for a great effort with a week of rest.

There have been a number of quality performers stepping up for the Lady Rams this season. One of the performers who to rise to the occasion this season is junior sprinter Chantelle Bethea. She posted a 25.54 in the women’s 200m dash last week. Freshman Manuela Rigaud has also run well as one of the top middle distance runners on the team. Last week, she ran a 2:21.06 in the women’s 800m run and a 5:00.59 in the women’s 1500m run.

The Reebok Raleigh Relays are scheduled to begin Friday morning and the event will close on Saturday.
