Track, softball student-athletes take weekly honors

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Freshman Jasmine James (Willingboro, N.J.) and Akheem
Gauntlett (Roselle, N.J.) have been named University of Maryland Eastern Shore
Athletes of the Week for the period ending March 29.

James, a shortstop on the softball team, hit .500 with three runs scored and one driven in
four games at the Delaware State tournament over the weekend.

James best performance came as UMES picked up its first win of the season, 8-7, over
North Carolina Central. James hits 3-for-4 and scored twice against the Lady Eagles.

The Lady Hawks are back in action Wednesday at Norfolk State for a doubleheader
starting at 1 p.m.

Gauntlett, of the men's track and field team, finished second in the 400 meters at the
Maryland Invitational Saturday. He ran a time of 47.96, qualifying for the Intercollegiate
Association of Amateur Athletes of America Championships held in conjunction with the
ECAC Championships in May.

It was the second straight week Gauntlett was named UMES Male Athlete of the Week.

The Hawks next run at the Penn Invitational April 3 at Franklin Field.
