Shaw Sweeps Doubleheader with Saint Paul’s 5-4 and 12-2 Sherri Fillingham 04/02/10 (Raleigh, NC) – Shaw won two very different softball games against Saint Paul’s – taking the first 5-4 in extra innings then ending the second game early on the mercy rule and a 12-2 win. Shaw is currently on a three-game winning streak and has won the last seven of eight games, bringing their season mark to 12-20. The Lady Bears got on top early in the first game, scoring two in the first and two in the third for a 4-0 lead. Saint Paul’s answered with one in the fourth, another in the sixth, and two more in the seventh to tie the game and force the extra inning. Shaw’s Chrystina Smith, placed on second at the top of the inning as part of the tiebreaker rules, sprinted from second to home on a dropped third strike, winning the game for the Lady Bears 5-4. Pitcher Aerial Sanders, who was honored at Senior Day activities before the game, won the game for the Lady Bears, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits and 12 walks. She is 4-10 on the season, and is the lone senior on the Lady Bears squad. Saint Paul’s jumped on top, 1-0 in the first inning of the second game, but Shaw took advantage of some Lady Tiger miscues, scoring three in the second, seventh in the third and another two in the fourth for a 12-1 lead. Saint Paul’s scraped out a run in the fifth, but could do no more, triggering the eight-run rule and ending the game with Shaw’s 12-2 victory. The Lady Bears scored their 12 runs on only seven hits, but took advantage of five Saint Paul’s errors. Cinnamon Morrow (8-10) won the second game, allowing two unearned runs, walking two and striking out one. The Lady Bears spend the rest of the regular season on the road, with games against Bowie State April 6 and Lincoln on April 7. |
