Two Trojans Will Compete in NCAA Outdoor Championships Jason Pompey Virginia State University seniors, Shanise Lewis (Yorktown, VA) and Hoova Taylor (Tappahannock, VA) will compete in this year’s NCAA Outdoor Championships on May 27-29 on the campus of Johnson C. Smith University. Shanise Lewis will represent Virginia State University in the women’s 100 meter dash and Hoova Taylor will participate in the men’s high jump event. Team captain Shanise Lewis, plagued with injuries earlier this year limited her action thus not being able to qualify for the in the NCAA Indoor Championships. Lewis made a complete turnaround as she set a lifetime best and school record in the women’s 100 meter dash with a record breaking time of 11.94 feet. “I cannot think of anyone else more deserving than Shanise, I am excited because there’s still more untapped talent there” Ernest Moss, the head coach of the VSU, said. “College Men’s High Jump Champion”, Hoova Taylor was crowned with that title after he placed first at the 116th Annual Penn Relays. Taylor won the Penn Relays by jumping an incredible 2.12m (6’ 11.5”). Each event that Taylor has competed in he has dominated the competition. His reign started at the 2010 Merrill Lynch Track Classic on April 10 in Lynchburg, VA. Taylor won the event with a leap of 2.14m (7' 0.25"). His next victory was at the 2010 CIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships held at Virginia State University. Taylor rose 2.13m in order to capture first place in the high jump event beating the defending 2010 Indoor High Jump Champion. “Hoova cleared seven feet, three times and two out of the three was on tired legs, I'm excited to see what he does on rested legs.” Coach Ernest Moss said. Shanise Lewis and Hoova Taylor both graduated on May 16 and will each have a chance to write their final page in their last chapter at Virginia State University. |
