Hawks look to continue season and advance to the NCAA Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Eight members of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore
men's and women's outdoor track and field teams are set to compete at the NCAA
Division I East Regional, held this Thursday through Saturday at the Irwin Belk Track on
the campus of North Carolina A&T State University.

The meet begins Thursday at 10:00 a.m. with the women's javelin throw; however, the
Hawks do not start competition until the women's shot put qualifying at 3:00 p.m.

Sophomore Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) leads UMES in the shot put with a
school-record distance of 14.97 meters, which she recorded at the Mid-Eastern Athletic
Conference Championships to qualify for the regional.

The men's squad continues the afternoon with the first round of the 400-meter hurdles at
3:30 p.m. Sophomore Johan Welter (Paris, France) qualified for this event with his time
of 52.37 that was set at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational.

Senior Allodin Fothergill (New Hempstead, N.Y.) and junior Thomas Keane-Dawes
(Camden, N.C.) both qualified for the first round of the men's 400-meter dash. Fothergill
ranks 10th overall in the east regional with his MEAC Championships time of 46.00.
Keane-Dawes also qualified at the MEAC Championships with his time of 46.79.

The evening concludes for the Hawks with the first round of the women's 800-meter run.

Sophomore Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France) and redshirt junior Eunice Jones
(Lanham, Md.) both qualified for the event at the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference
Championships with their respective times of 2:05.84 and 2:07.13.

UMES does not return to action until Friday night with the men's 400m quarterfinals
taking place at 5:30 p.m. The women's 800m quarterfinals follow at 6:45 p.m. while the
men's 400m hurdles quarterfinal takes place at 7:00 p.m.

Sophomore Damian Miles (Teaneck, N.J.) wraps up Friday for the Hawks in the first
round of the 200-meter dash, which is slated for 7:30 p.m. Miles qualified with a time of
21.20, which was registered at the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of
American Championships.


Saturday begins at 6:00 p.m. for UMES with the men's 4x100 relay quarterfinal. The trio
of Keane-Dawes, Fothergill and Miles join sophomore Akheem Gauntlett (Roselle,
N.J.) in this event with their qualifying and school-record time of 40.01, which was set at
the MEAC Championships.

The Hawks finish the weekend with the men's 200m quarterfinals at 7:35 p.m. Saturday.
