Tigers Fight for Comeback but Fall Short Rodney Bush Shreveport, LA-The Texas Southern Tigers came into their game behind a bad omen that plagued the top seeds in day one of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Baseball Championship Tournament. The first three teams fell prey to the lower seeds in a day of delays and upsets. Texas Southern’s game against Alabama State was pushed back four hours because of a lightning storm and rain in the area. The first pitch was at 10:17pm. Alabama State scored first in the first inning. TSU got on the board and tied the game at 1 in the second inning when Brandon Mikell hit a fielder’s choice shot to the shortstop which allowed Kirk Pruitt to score. Alabama State scored single runs in the 5th and 6th innings to take a 3-1 lead. The Tigers fought through their struggles to tie the game at 3 in the seventh inning when Ray Hernandez hit a triple to right center which sent Corbin Smith and Pruitt home. Alabama State picked up two runs in the 8th and two runs in the top of the 9th. TSU got one run in the 8th and went into the bottom of the 9th down 4-7. The Tigers got their lead-off man, Derik Daniel on base with a walk. He then advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Smith walked and TSU now had men on first and second with no outs. Daniel got to third base when Hernandez was called out on the infield fly rule. Terrel Jones reached first on a fielder’s choice but Smith was out at second for TSU’s second out. Michael Norris walked to load the bases and the Tigers had their shot at a come from behind win. But the omen of the day held up, and TSU could not get their base runners across the plate. The final score..TSU 4 ASU 7. Texas Southern will face Mississippi Valley at Noon on Thursday in an elimination game.
