acers Rally from Double Digit Deficit to Earn Season Split with ECSU

AIKEN, SC-The University of South Carolina-Aiken rallied from a double digit second half deficit to capture a 67-65 win over the Elizabeth City State University Vikings Friday night at the Convocation Center.

The Pacers’ win avenges their only loss of the year, a 70-66 setback to ECSU on November 19th in Elizabeth City.

In the second half the Vikings led by as many as 12 and were up 63-54 with 3:33 left, when the Pacers surged with an 11-1 run to take a 65-64 lead with 1:38 to go. Marquie Cooke hit one of two free throw attempts with 45 seconds left to tie the game at 65 apiece.

On their ensuing possession the Re’Mon Nelson’s running jumper in the paint with 10 seconds left would prove to be the game’s winning basket.

Angelo Sharpless got a clean look at a three-point attempt but the shot rimmed out as time expired.

Although ECSU, who held a 35-30 lead at the break, controlled most of the second half the Vikings did not score from the field in the final 3:33 of the contest. During that span ECSU attempted only one shot and was sloppy with the ball, committing four costly turnovers.

Fourteen (14) second half turnovers proved to be the Vikings’ undoing and the Pacers (7-1) capitalized by scoring 20 points of ECSU’s miscues.

Blake Price matched his career best with 21 points, the Vikings’ only double digit scorer on the night.

ECSU (6-3) will return to action against Lenoir-Rhyne University tomorrow at 1:00pm.
