West Virginia Wesleyan Races Past Chowan, 68-47 David Hodge 12/30/11 BUCKHANNON, WV – Despite having three players score in double figures, the Chowan University offense struggled in a 68-47 loss at West Virginia Wesleyan College on Friday. With the loss, the Hawks move to 6-6 on the year. The Bobcats improve to 6-3 with the win. Chowan shot 35.7% from the floor, while WVWC nailed 56.3% of their shots. Quinton McDuffie led Chowan with 18 points on 8-16 shooting. He also pulled down a team high five rebounds. Kyree Bethel drained a trio of three pointers, leading to 11 points. Mark McGlone chipped in with ten points and a team high three steals. Chowan owned a slim 8-7 lead five minutes into the contest, and later tied the game at 12 with a McDuffie three-pointer, but then suffered a long scoring drought. After McDuffie's three, the Hawks missed their next ten shots, leading to a nine minute, seven second span without scoring. With 4:45 remaining in the first half, the Bobcats held a 26-12 lead. McDuffie ended the drought with a jumper at the 4:05 mark, and Bethel scored Chowan's final five points of the half, sending the Hawks into halftime with a 32-19 deficit. West Virginia Wesleyan maintained a 14 point lead (46-32) with 13:46 remaining in the game when Chowan's offense provided a much needed spark. Consecutive jumpers by Mark Anthony Buright and McGlone, as well as a pair of free throws from McGlone, brought Chowan within eight at 46-38 with 11:27 on the clock. Much like the first half, though, Chowan could not find the basket while West Virginia Wesleyan pulled away. Over the next 7:22, the Bobcats went on a 12-2 run to open up a 58-40 lead; a deficit from which Chowan could not recover. West Virginia Wesleyan held a 14-6 advantage in assists and committed just ten turnovers. Kelsey Williams shot 11-17 from the floor, giving him a game high 26 points. Raymont McElroy (16) and Reggie Chambers (14) also notched double figures for WVWC. Chowan shot just five free throws in the game, making four. WVWC went 12-18 from the charity stripe. Neither team shot particularly well from three point territory, as Chowan went 3-14, and WVWC shot just 2-9. Chowan will open CIAA play on Wednesday, January 4th, when they travel to Johnson C. Smith University for a 7:30pm tip-off. |
