HAWKS TAKE SECOND IN NAVY INVITATIONAL EDWARD T. JONES II 01/16/12 Seven UMES Student-Athletes Set New Records Princess Anne, Md.-The University of Maryland Eastern Shore Indoor Track and Field teams finished second at the Navy Invitational Saturday. Vanessa Henry tossed 15.95- meters in the shot put to finish first, and set the new Wesley Brown Field House record. Henry broke the former record held by Ranita Mealer of Morgan State. Later in the invitational Henry would also set a new field house and UMES record in the weight throw with a distance of 18.25m. She finished first place in that event as well. "The Hawks had some outstanding performances," said head coach Ernest Barrett excitedly. In total, seven Hawks broke school or personal best records at Navy. Henry set records in the shot put and weight throw, while Imani Cox finished second and set a new personal best of 15.12m in the throw. Chelsea Lowe set a new UMES record in the pole vault with her vault of 3.30m. In the sprints, Lenora Firmin-Guion ran a UMES record breaking time of 1:12.11 in the 500m, and finish first in the event. Teammate Kenesha Abrams finished second, and would run a personal best time of 1:15.16. Annis Mars posted a 3:04.77 in the 1,000m run setting a personal best time in the event. With an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference qualifying time of 4:58.21, Cynthia Anais finished second in the one-mile run. On the men's side, Jermol Dix finished first in two heptathlon events. Dix threw a 12.68m in the men's shot put and ran 8.47-seconds in the 60m hurdles. Owen Cain jumped a top five finish distance of 6.49m in the long jump. Cain placed first in the triple jump with a 14.82m, which also qualified as an IC4A distance. |
