LADY HAWKS HEAD UP ROUTE 13 SEEKING SECOND WIN OVER DELAWARE STATE DAVE VATZ JANUARY 12, 2011 UMES defeated Lady Hornets 60-32 in December, will play Saturday at 5 p.m. PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - UMES (3-10, 1-1 MEAC) will finish a nine-game road trip with a rematch against Delaware State (3-12, 0-2 MEAC) on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. at Memorial Hall in Dover along Route 13. The Lady Hawks defeated the Lady Hornets back in December 60-32 and look to snap a three-game losing streak. - LAST TIME OUT: After trailing by 15 at halftime, the Lady Hawks came back to tie the game, but a Rae Corbo buzzer beater doomed UMES 61-58 on the road against Norfolk State last Saturday. Down 34-19 at the half, UMES went on a 9-0 run to get within six at the 16:27 mark and held NSU without a field goal for nearly eight minutes. With NSU up 41-36 with 12:05 left, Kwinnyata Mercer made UMES's next three baskets in less than two minutes for eight points, tying the game at 41. After the Lady Spartans retook the lead, a late UMES 6-0 run tied the game at 58 with 24 seconds left. Before time expired, Corbo received the in-bounds pass and scored the long-range three for the win. Adobi Agbasi led UMES with 12 points and four blocks, while Mercer got 10 points and six boards. Corbo and Batavia Owens each finished with 16 points for the Lady Spartans. - SERIES HISTORY: UMES and Delaware State play for the second time season after the Lady Hawks won at home 60-32 on December 3rd, holding the Lady Hornets to eights points in the first half and being led by Adobi Agbasi's double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds. Delaware State leads the series 46-33, with the Lady Hawks winning the last three and seven of the last eight contests. . - SCOUTING THE LADY HORNETS: Currently on a five-game losing streak, Delaware State stands at 3-12 on the season, looking for its first conference win after losses against UMES and Howard in December. Forward Tierra Hawkins, two time MEAC Rookie of the Week, leads the Lady Hornets in three major categories with 13.4 points, 6.3 rebounds and a block per game. Averaging 12.4 points a game, sophomore Tasia Bristow has 34 steals and 30 assists. - COACH BATCHELOR APPROACHING 100TH UMES WIN: Fred Batchelor is just two wins away from reaching his 100th win with the UMES, currently standing at 98-120 in his eight seasons. This will make Coach Batchelor the first in UMES women's basketball history to reach that mark. - AGBASI REACHES 150-BLOCK MILESTONE: Blocking four shots against Norfolk State, Adobi Agbasi stands at 162 blocks in her career. This season, Agbasi ha 31 blocks, standing second in the MEAC in that category. She stands second all-time in blocks in UMES history behind Kristi Veltkamp, who finished with 231 blocks from 2004 to 2008. - BARR EARNS MEAC ROOKIE OF THE WEEK: Porsha Barr got UMES's first weekly MEAC award, getting Rookie of the Week for the period ending Jan. 1. Th freshman forward shot 3-5 against Wake Forest, totaling eight points and three boards. -PROTECTING THE PERIMETER: UMES is 32nd in Division I and second in the MEAC in three-point shooting defense, with opponents shooting just 25% from beyond the arc. The Lady Hawks have allowed four or less three-point baskets in eight of their 12 games this season, including last time out, allowing four to Norfolk State. - CHELSEA LEADING THE WAY: Chelsea Sanders leads UMES with 11.8 points per contest, earning double digit points in nine games this season. She also sports a team high 22 steals and is second on UMES with 5.5 rebounds a game. Sanders has twice tied a career high 22 points against UMBC and Old Dominion. |
